Jesse White’s administration has been working hard to keep the citizens Illinois safe. Throughout his twenty years in office, he’s been primarily focusing on encouraging organ donations and promoting road safety.
“The gift of organ donation is tremendous,” he said. “We have a lot of great people out there that just need an opportunity to show their greatness to the world.”– Jesse White (Source)
- Expanding availability – Secretary White has long pushed for allowing new drivers, especially teens, to allow them to sign up for the Organ Donation Registry when they receive their license. Now, new legislation allows people of 16 years to sign up for the registry.
- Advocating for donation – When I first met Secretary White, he recited facts about tissue and organ donation in the state, clearly memorized from years of repetition. The main reason for his passionate promotion of organ donation is because of his sister’s near-death experience whose life was saved due to a kidney transplant. Today, because of it, he proudly announced that 6.2 million citizens have registered.
“We’re talking about tough love here and we have to start early on teaching our young people the rules of the road.”– Jesse White (Source)
- Educating new drivers – Secretary White has improved the Graduated Driver Licensing in Illinois by requiring newly permitted drivers’ to have a minimum of 50 hours of driving as well as hold the permit for 9 months.
- Discouraging distracted driving – Under his administration, Secretary White has been able to crack down on DUI by requiring previous offenders to install a BAIID device. On top of this, teen driver deaths have decreased by over 50% since 2008 due to improved regulation such as a maximum number of passengers for new drivers and banning minors under nineteen from using a hand held device while driving.
Though Secretary White’s administration two focal points have been organ donation and road safety, he’s also improved benefits for veterans, updated many services to be available online, and turned around an office that was previously corrupt.
