4/26/19 – Friday
Today, I went to the James R. Thompson Center once again. The purpose of the day would be to host a presentation about the importance of organ and tissue donation by Secretary White. With him were three White Sox retirees, as well as a special guest whom I will explain about later.
Once I arrived, I met up with all of the regional coordinators from the previous day (Margaret Pearson, Jan Eschen, Dan Lietz, Angelique Marseille, and Gavin Dillon), as well as Mrs. Boatman and Secretary White. I came in early to help set up tables, as well as introduce myself to the special guest. Her name was Sofia Sanchez. Sofia recently received a life saving heart transplant at Lurie’s Children hospital in Downers Grove. Prior to surgery, she was visited by famous singer Drake, who gave her his blessings. The visit was recorded and used by Life Goes On throughout April as a commercial to increase awareness about organ and tissue donation. Check out the commercial here.
At the event, my job was to attract an audience and pass out flyers. I walked around the building and approached people and introduced the speech, as well as give them pamphlets and point them to the direction of the talk. In the end, the event had around 100-200 attendees.
Secretary White began the event with an introduction about the importance of organ and tissue donation, as well as provide some details about the process. Afterwards, Sofia told her story to the audience while the White Sox retirees signed autographs on the side. We were able to converse with plenty of people, and some even told us their story and experiences with donation. Overall, it was very interesting and an eye opening experience as I was able to better my skills of approaching random people, as well as getting rejected. I hope to attend events like these in the future.
