6/14/19 – Friday
Today, I drove to Chicago and met Vernalynne De La Rosa, the director of the McKinley Park Underage Drinking and Other Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition (McK-UDOS).
McK-UDOS is a the substance abuse prevention program under the Midwest Asian Health Association (MAHA), a nonprofit organization that works to serve underprivileged minorities in the Chicagoland area. I have previously volunteered for MAHA, and through them I discovered McK-UDOS. After discussing with the director of MAHA, Dr. Hong Liu, I was given the opportunity to work alongside Mrs. De La Rosa with her mission to end substance abuse among the youth in McKinley Park.
The aim of McK-UDOS, as stated in their mission statement, is to:
“Our mission is to prevent underage drinking and marijuana use among youth in the McKinley Park neighborhood of Chicago through building partnerships, assessing the community’s needs and resources, developing strategic plans, and implementing and evaluating the coalition’s activities for awareness, advocacy, education, and sustainability.”McKinley Park Underage Drinking and Other Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition
My roll for the duration of my internship (6/14 – 8/1/2019) is to help raise awareness and organize the community through various outreach methods. I plan to walk through McKinley Park – and other surrounding areas such as Chinatown, Bridgeport, Little Village, Brighton Park, Back of the Yards, and Fuller Park – and talk directly to schools, health care facilities, and businesses. I look forward to this internship more than you could imagine.
