6/26/19 – Wednesday
Today was my first official work day in the office. Once I arrived, Vernalynne showed me the ropes of how we use social media for outreach purposes in our community. Our goal with the use of social media is two fold: first, to raise awareness about the importance of avoiding harmful substance use, and second, to spread our coalitions name in hopes of gathering support.
So far, we’ve been using Twitter (https://twitter.com/mckudos_chi) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/mckudoscoalition/) for outreach purposes. Often, we’ll post infographics, statistics, or link to scientific studies/research papers. We usually will accomodate these posts with either videos or photos as well.
On both social media platforms, I will be posting twice a day – once in the morning and once in the afternoon. According to various studies, it has been shown that the best times to post on Twitter are between 8-10AM and 6-9PM. On Facebook it is at 9AM and 3-4PM. Check out this resource to learn more.
I also hope to initiate the coalitions first Instagram page. My reasoning for this is that Instagram is a platform where most of the youth in the U.S. gather. Every month, 1 billion people use Instagram. Of that, 38% are between the ages of 13-18. That’s 380,000,000 people who our organization’s mission is to target. Check out this resource to learn more. If I do begin an Instagram page, we’ll post twice a day, every day, at 1PM and 5PM.
Most of my day at the office consisted of research and planning. I was able to start scheduling some posts for the upcoming week, as well as meet the other employees at the office. Overall, it was a great day and I am looking forward to tomorrow.
