7/11/19 – Thursday
Today was a really great day. I was able to experience going out to the Chinatown community and talking to the various business owners. I loved being able to use Mandarin to talk to the business owners at different stores, because it helps me both expand my vocabulary and practice my Chinese. People in New Chinatown speak a variety of languages, usually being Mandarin, Traditional Chinese, Cantonese, or English.
I visited several businesses today, and even convinced one store to join the coalition! I was able to leave pamphlets and other distribution materials at stores across Chinatown, and it was really great.
Some of the businesses I visited included bubble tea stores, medicinal businesses, liquor outlets, and even a real estate agency.
I met a lot of people and I think that whenever I go back to Chinatown, these new friends will recognize me. I hope that this continued relationship with help the organization spread awareness about preventing drug use among the youth, as well as spread its own recognition as a nonprofit.
Once difficulty I faced was speaking with Cantonese. Cantonese, contrary to popular belief, is nothing like Mandarin and it is difficult to understand. I was able to break through this barrier, however, and clearly convey the mission of the organization. Regardless, I had so much fun and I can’t wait to come back Wednesday to do it again.
